Here is what Lawn Butler does for their irrigation system winterization service:

Locate point of connection.
Find the main irrigation line shut-off valve and turn to off.

Locate Backflow Device
Make sure backflow is open so air can be blown through the line.

Connect to a sprinkler-head
Remove nozzle and connect air compressor hose.

Turn compressor on
Blow out until all the water is out of the line.

Re-attach nozzle and Shut off Timer
Remove the batteries until spring.
